Deep Experience Learning Community

Thirty organisations. Twelve months. One toolkit.

Across Australia, organisations are trying many different ways to engage young people. Those lessons are rarely shared. We brought the sector into one room to change that.

Commissioned by Social Enterprise Australia as part of the Australian Government's Social Enterprise Development Initiative.

Built By The Sector

The people who made it.

In 2025 and 2026 we launched the Deep Experience Learning Community. It brought more than thirty of Australia's leading youth organisations together to strengthen how young people are engaged as contributors, leaders, and decision-makers.

This national youth engagement toolkit grew out of that shared learning. It brings together their strategies, challenges, and lessons from practice, capturing what is being tried, what is working, and what we are still learning about meaningful youth engagement.

How It Worked

Three kinds of sessions, on repeat for a year.

Learning Sessions

Every month the Community came together for a two-hour session on a single stage of youth engagement. Each began with a guest speaker from a leading social enterprise who shared their models, insights, and hard-won strategies. Participants then moved into breakout rooms of real exchange, comparing approaches and pressure-testing their own against their peers.

Co-design Sessions

Between sessions we synthesised the Community's collective insight into focused five-page strategy booklets. These included the stage's common challenges, guiding insights, strategies, case studies and the assessment checklist.

Application Sessions

Every quarter we released a different section of the toolkit for organisations to use in their day to day work. Organisations could pilot strategies, adapt ideas to fit their context, and test what genuinely worked for young people.

What It Added Up To

The numbers behind the toolkit.

1,000 hours
of collective learning

Across sessions, breakout rooms, and collaboration, our Community of Practice invested close to 1,000 hours together.

30+ organisations
from across Australia

Youth and social enterprise organisations from every corner of the country, bringing the realities of city, regional, and remote practice into one shared conversation.

12 Months
of sector collaboration

From early 2025 to 2026, more than thirty organisations met month after month to build something none of them could have built alone.

54 Strategies
tested and rebuilt

Every strategy in this toolkit was critiqued, refined, and rebuilt by the people who use it. 54 practical approaches across the full lifecycle of youth engagement.

15 Sector experts
and guest speakers

They shared the models, insights, and hard-won strategies behind their own practice, so the Community could learn from experts in youth engagement.

6 Case studies
from the real world

Six organisations opened up their practice in full, showing exactly how strong youth engagement works on the ground.

The Year

Every session, in order.

Each Learning Session took one stage of the journey. Co-design sessions rebuilt what we had. Reflection periods consolidated it.

WHAT MEMBERS SAID

The part nobody expected was each other.

“These sessions surprised me, to be quite honest. I didn't think that I would be as engaged as I was. The most valuable part of this is the building of community with people who are all passionate about the same thing.

Community of Practice member

“I always leave these sessions feeling super inspired to better the work that we do and improve our processes.”

“Coming from a small team, there's not really many people I can bounce ideas off. It's just great coming here and going, I've got this idea, what about this? And you're actually on the same page.”

Community of Practice member

“It's almost like an expansion of your team. In the for-purpose and not-for-profit space, we're often too small and our funding is too tight to have every single solution ourselves.”

Community of Practice member

“My big win is learning from all of you, who you are and what you do. I've been able to have deep dive chats with other members, and it's been just fantastic in getting to understand the space of direct youth engagement more.”

Community of Practice member

“We finally got to catch up physically, and it was just amazing. Even if we're doing different things, there are similar things we're all trying to attract, engage, and maintain.”

The Innovation Summit is a one-day event that brings students from different schools together to work on a real problem. Most people start here, because it takes a single day and helps you deep dive into the world of innovation and entrepreneurship.

FutureHack is built for this

FutureHack is a six-week program where teams build and launch a real venture, then pitch it to real industry. Most people arrive with a rough idea and leave with a business, a pitch, and proof they can do it again.

Young Artists Centre

Young Artists Centre is an immersive, extracurricular retail program where you learn to price, sell and scale the things you make. Most people arrive thinking their work is a hobby and leave running a small business.
